Instructions for Use (IFU) & Printing Parameters for closed mode laser-based SLA systems (Formlabs-type platforms)

These guidelines can be used for printing our 3D resins with Formlabs and other SLA laser printers.

Standard settings

  • Z layer thickness: 50–100 microns (lower or higher can also be printable).
  • Form 2 (open mode): many basic 3Dresyns can be printed using the Formlabs Clear v2 profile and pouring resin directly into the vat.
  • Form 3: use Standard Clear or Grey settings with a universal cartridge system (e.g., “ProtoART”).
  • Some specific 3Dresyns may require tuning with Fine Tuner FT1 and/or Fine Tuner LB1 Bio (free samples can be supplied if/when needed) to match specific specs (e.g., special z layers).

Basic vs multifunctional resins (important)

Our 3Dresyns can be divided into two groups: basic and multifunctional.

  • Basic 3Dresyns are our standard resins before adding optional functionality online during ordering.
  • After adding functional additives, basic resins become multifunctional 3Dresyns and may require more control of printing settings.

Keep in mind that over 2000 colors and up to 4 functional additives (among ~50) can be added online to ~500 basic 3Dresyns, creating an extremely broad design space. Additionally, ~50 functional additives can also be purchased separately for your own dosing.

If you want to keep it simple: do not add optional functional additives to your order. If you want specific performance, explore our multifunctional offering.

Fine tuning for print speed and resolution (optional)

Closed-mode (“black box”) printers may require tuning to reach optimum speed and resolution at your chosen specs.

  • Fine Tuner FT1: general-purpose photo-accelerant to increase printing speed (typical dosing steps: 0.1–0.2%).
  • Fine Tuner LB1 Bio: resolution increaser to reduce light bleeding/overcure and improve XYZ detail (typical dosing steps: 0.3–0.4%). Ultra-low water absorption version: LB1 Bio ULWA.

Note: additional fine-tuning additives and consulting are available for advanced optimisation.

Calibration workflow (using 3DTest files)

  • Step 1: Select z layer thickness (typically 10–100 microns; 50 microns is a common high-resolution starting point).
  • Step 2: Select supports strategy (position, density, tip size).
  • Step 3: Print 3DTest1 (wedge or flat coin) without supports to confirm printability and screen material behaviour.
  • Step 4: Print 3DTest2 (flat coin with supports) to evaluate XYZ resolution and dimensional accuracy.

Failure hints (quick)

  • If the whole print detaches from the build platform: increase energy dosage (open mode) or add FT1 in 0.1% steps (Formlabs closed mode).
  • If part prints and part fails: adjust energy dosage (open mode) or tune FT1 up/down (Formlabs).
