Practical Consulting for Additive Manufacturing Implementation

Successful additive manufacturing requires alignment between materials, printing parameters, post-processing and end-use requirements.

3Dresyns® offers printing and processing consulting services designed to support customers in the practical implementation, optimization, troubleshooting and stabilization of additive manufacturing processes.

These services are separate from the routine Product support included with standard Product purchases and are provided under an agreed consulting scope.

What Printing Consulting Covers

Printing consulting focuses primarily on the printing process and its direct interaction with the material and downstream processing.

Depending on the agreed project scope, 3Dresyns® may support customers with:

  • printer and technology selection;
  • material-printer compatibility assessment;
  • printing parameter definition;
  • exposure and curing strategy;
  • parameter optimization;
  • troubleshooting of print defects and failures;
  • process-window assessment;
  • dimensional control;
  • process stability and repeatability;
  • cleaning and post-processing strategy;
  • post-curing conditions;
  • debinding and sintering considerations where applicable; and
  • documentation of recommended printing workflows.

The objective is to help the customer establish a technically appropriate and reproducible process for its particular material, printer and application.

Technologies and Processes Supported

3Dresyns® provides printing and processing consulting across multiple additive-manufacturing technologies, including where applicable:

  • SLA, DLP, LCD and related vat-photopolymerization technologies;
  • Inkjet and material-jetting systems;
  • binder-based and powder-based processes;
  • Cold SLS fusion technologies, including CMF, CCF and CEPF;
  • ceramic, metal, polymer and composite printing processes;
  • debinding and sintering workflows;
  • hybrid additive-manufacturing processes; and
  • non-standard or emerging AM technologies.

Consulting is application- and process-specific. Technology-level guidance should not be interpreted as universal validation for every printer, machine configuration or end-use application.

Printing performance cannot always be evaluated independently from material properties and downstream processing.

Depending on the application, consulting may therefore consider:

  • material rheology;
  • cure response;
  • exposure strategy;
  • resolution requirements;
  • dimensional accuracy;
  • cleaning;
  • post-curing;
  • thermal processing;
  • debinding;
  • sintering;
  • final mechanical or functional requirements; and
  • other relevant downstream conditions.

This integrated approach is intended to reduce the risk of optimizing one processing stage while unintentionally creating problems at a later stage.

Material Adjustment versus Custom Development

Printing consulting may identify that material characteristics such as viscosity, cure response, resolution, sedimentation behavior or other parameters need to be adjusted.

Where appropriate, 3Dresyns® may recommend use of an existing Product, Fine Tuner or other available material solution.

Custom material reformulation, synthesis or development is not automatically included in printing consulting.

If the customer's requirements require modification or development of a formulation beyond the agreed consulting scope, the work may be treated as a separate custom-development, formulation or technology-transfer project with its own scope, pricing, confidentiality and intellectual-property conditions.

Who This Consulting Is For

Printing and processing consulting may be appropriate for:

  • industrial users transferring materials between printers;
  • manufacturers scaling printing operations;

Project Scope

Each consulting engagement is defined according to the customer's technical problem and requested scope.

The applicable quotation or consulting agreement may define:

  • the technical objective;
  • Products and printers involved;
  • information to be supplied by the customer;
  • activities included;
  • deliverables;
  • number or type of technical reviews;
  • meetings or videoconferences where applicable;
  • customer-site work where applicable;
  • testing responsibilities;
  • project duration or milestones;
  • fees and payment conditions;
  • confidentiality;
  • intellectual-property conditions; and
  • activities expressly excluded from scope.

Work materially outside the agreed scope may require a separate quotation or written extension of the project.

Information Required from the Customer

The quality of the technical assessment depends on the completeness and accuracy of the information supplied by the customer.

Customers may be requested to provide relevant information such as:

  • printer manufacturer and model;
  • printing technology;
  • wavelength or light source;
  • layer thickness;
  • current printing parameters;
  • geometry and support strategy;
  • cleaning process;
  • post-curing conditions;
  • environmental conditions;
  • photographs of printed parts or defects;
  • relevant dimensional or test data;
  • desired Product properties; and
  • a description of the problem or objective.

3Dresyns® cannot reliably assess process variables or requirements that have not been disclosed.

How Consulting Is Delivered

Depending on the agreed scope, consulting may be delivered through:

  • written technical assessment;
  • email-based technical exchanges;
  • review of customer-supplied process information;
  • remote meetings or videoconferences;
  • analysis of photographs, results or customer-generated data;
  • structured recommendations and parameter tables;
  • technical reports or workflow documentation where included; and
  • technical support at the customer's facilities where expressly agreed.

Customer-site consulting means that 3Dresyns® personnel may travel to the customer's facilities where expressly contracted. It does not create any reciprocal right for the customer to access, inspect or audit 3Dresyns® facilities.

Customer access to 3Dresyns® facilities is governed separately by the Company's External Audit and Facility Access Policy.

Remote Consulting

Remote consulting is normally based on written information and documentation supplied by the customer.

Where videoconferencing is useful, it may be included in the agreed consulting scope.

Remote consulting does not require or authorize access by the customer to 3Dresyns® internal systems, facilities, laboratories or confidential development infrastructure.

Customer-Site Consulting

Where expressly agreed, 3Dresyns® may provide consulting or training at the customer's premises.

The customer is responsible for providing appropriate access to the equipment, process and information required for the agreed work and for maintaining appropriate workplace, laboratory and safety conditions.

Customer-site work may be subject to additional travel, accommodation, time and expense charges as specified in the applicable quotation.

Experimental Work

Consulting does not automatically include experimental printing, laboratory testing or formulation work performed by 3Dresyns®.

Where experimental work is required, the quotation or project scope should expressly identify:

  • the experiments to be performed;
  • materials to be used;
  • test methods where applicable;
  • number of iterations;
  • expected deliverables; and
  • associated fees.

Additional experimental iterations requested after completion of the agreed scope may require additional fees.

Recommendations and Printing Parameters

Printing parameters developed or recommended during consulting are based on the information, equipment, material, geometry and conditions considered during the project.

Parameters may require further adjustment where the customer changes:

  • printer model;
  • light source;
  • machine condition;
  • layer thickness;
  • part geometry;
  • orientation;
  • support structure;
  • environmental conditions;
  • cleaning;
  • post-curing; or
  • other relevant process variables.

A parameter set should therefore not be interpreted as universally transferable to every machine or application.

Target Outcomes

Depending on the initial process condition, available information and project scope, consulting may aim to achieve improvements such as:

  • better print quality and resolution;
  • improved dimensional control;
  • greater process stability;
  • greater repeatability;
  • reduced failed prints;
  • reduced unnecessary material consumption;
  • faster establishment of suitable printing parameters;
  • improved understanding of process limits;
  • better integration between printing and post-processing; and
  • more structured troubleshooting and process control.

These are potential project objectives and not guaranteed outcomes.

No Guaranteed Result

Additive-manufacturing results depend on multiple factors that may be outside the direct control of 3Dresyns®, including printer condition, hardware, optical performance, customer implementation, geometry, operator practices, environmental conditions, cleaning, post-processing and post-curing.

Unless a specific measurable result has been expressly accepted as a contractual deliverable, consulting is provided as professional technical assistance and does not constitute a guarantee that a particular performance level or outcome will be achieved.

Customer Implementation

The customer remains responsible for implementing recommendations in its own equipment and manufacturing environment.

The customer should verify and validate the final process under its actual operating conditions before relying on it for production, regulated use or other critical applications.

Final Application Validation

Printing and processing consulting does not by itself constitute certification, qualification or regulatory validation of the customer's final printed part, medical device, dental device, industrial Product or manufacturing process.

The customer remains responsible for application-specific testing, qualification, regulatory assessment and validation required for its intended final use.

Regulated Applications

Where the customer intends to use a material or process in a medical, dental or other regulated application, 3Dresyns® may provide relevant Product information within the agreed scope.

Unless expressly contracted as a separate service, printing consulting does not make 3Dresyns® the regulatory manufacturer of the customer's final Product and does not transfer the customer's regulatory obligations to 3Dresyns®.

Confidentiality

Technical consulting may require the exchange of confidential information concerning the customer's application or 3Dresyns® technology.

Where appropriate, such information may be governed by an applicable NDA or other confidentiality agreement.

Customers should not disclose confidential information belonging to unrelated third parties unless they are legally authorized to do so.

3Dresyns Intellectual Property

Consulting does not transfer ownership of 3Dresyns® pre-existing formulations, materials, trade secrets, proprietary know-how, software, methods, workflows or other background intellectual property.

Recommendations concerning the use of a 3Dresyns® Product likewise do not transfer ownership of the underlying Product formulation or proprietary technology.

Customer Intellectual Property

Information, designs, data and intellectual property supplied by the customer remain subject to the customer's applicable rights.

3Dresyns® does not acquire ownership of a customer's independent invention merely because it provides printing or processing consulting.

New Intellectual Property and Custom Development

If a project is expected to generate new formulations, inventions, patentable developments, custom materials or other significant new intellectual property, the ownership and exploitation rights should be addressed in the applicable development, consulting or technology-transfer agreement.

Printing consulting alone should not be interpreted as silently transferring intellectual-property ownership from one Party to the other.

Publications and Patent Filings

Where consulting involves Confidential Information, custom development or jointly generated non-public technical information, publication and patent filing must comply with the applicable confidentiality and intellectual-property arrangements.

Standard Product Support Is Separate

Routine Product support included with a standard Product purchase is separate from paid printing and processing consulting.

Brief clarification of an IFU or general Product recommendation may fall within routine Product support.

Substantial troubleshooting, parameter-development projects, experimental work, training, detailed process optimization or customer-specific engineering may require paid consulting.

Fees and Additional Work

Consulting fees are determined according to the applicable quotation, scope of work or service agreement.

Additional activities requested outside the agreed scope may require an additional quotation.

Product order-value and volume discounts do not automatically apply to consulting, training, custom development or other professional Services.

Communication

Written communication is generally preferred for technical consulting because it provides accuracy, traceability and a documented record of technical information and recommendations.

Videoconferences or other meetings may be used where included in the agreed project scope.

No Customer Access to 3Dresyns Facilities

Printing or processing consulting does not grant customers, auditors, consultants or other private third parties any right to access 3Dresyns® facilities, laboratories, manufacturing areas, systems or confidential operations.

Where physical support is required, 3Dresyns® may provide services at the customer's premises if expressly agreed.

The Company's facilities remain subject to the 3Dresyns® External Audit and Facility Access Policy.

Final Note

Reliable additive manufacturing depends on understanding the interaction between material behavior, printing parameters and downstream processing.

Governing Principle

3Dresyns® printing and processing consulting provides professional technical assistance to assess, optimize and troubleshoot additive-manufacturing processes. The applicable scope, activities and deliverables are defined for each project. Consulting does not guarantee a particular outcome, does not automatically include custom formulation development or regulatory validation, and does not grant customers access to 3Dresyns® facilities or confidential systems.

Related Policies
